Reviving Kyrgyzstan’s Nomadic Heritage: The Nomad Games Initiative

7

Kyrgyzstan’s rich cultural heritage is deeply rooted in its nomadic heritage, much of which was lost when the country fell under the Soviet Union. Local communities began reviving traditional practices, especially ancient nomadic games, since gaining independence in 1991. In 2007, the practitioners and specialists from all over the country met to address challenges like loss of traditional knowledge and young people’s lack of interest in the games. This collaboration led to the creation of the Nomad Games: Rediscovering Heritage initiative, based on documenting and archiving these games prior to their disappearance. These initiatives currently not only preserve Kyrgyz identity but also involve the younger generations in returning to their cultural past through traditional sport and community practices.
